The City Council starts a campaign on responsible ownership of pets (23/05/2018)

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has launched an awareness campaign on responsible ownership of pets with a double objective.

On the one hand, make the population aware of their rights and duties as owners of a pet and, on the other hand, promote the welfare of animals.

In this way, representatives of canine associations, veterinarians and a Local Police agent are developing awareness days that include didactic talks in the public schools of the town, aimed at students of Primary Education.

Likewise, it is also foreseen that talks will be given, open to the general public, in the Augusto Vels municipal park during the month of June.

The campaign highlights fundamental aspects such as the basic needs of animals, the differences between kennels and shelters, the importance of making the decision to acquire an animal in a thoughtful way, as well as the suitability of the chosen animal according to the lifestyle.

On the other hand, during the talks are also exposed the current legislation on pet ownership, mandatory requirements, the municipal ordinance on protection and possession of companion animals, as well as a brief reference to the penal code against animal abuse.

The mayor of the town, M ª Angeles Tunisia, stressed that "the goal of this campaign is to raise awareness from an early age of the responsibility of having a pet, as well as laying the groundwork to end the abuse and abandonment of animals "

Parallel, leaflets will be distributed with the slogan "I am a dog, do not make me look like a pig" with the aim of informing and raising awareness among citizens about the importance of collecting pet droppings on public roads.

In the same way, banners have been installed in the streetlights of all the parks in the town to draw attention to the citizens of the need to remove the excrement of their pets from the streets.

Members of Civil Protection and agents of the Local Police will inform about the contents of the campaign in various public spaces of the municipality such as parks and gardens.

In addition, veterinary clinics and pet stores in the municipality will disclose the contents of the campaign among their customers.

In this sense, the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, M ª Angeles Tunisia, stressed that "we intend to sensitize the owners of pets to collect the depositions of their animals, as they deteriorate the image of our city and are a source of contagion of diseases".

Finally, the Mayor has asked for the collaboration and involvement of all citizens to make Puerto Lumbreras a clean city.

It should be noted that the City of Puerto Lumbreras has a Municipal Ordinance on Protection and Tenure of Animals of Company and Parks and Gardens to ensure respect and good maintenance of these spaces.

The Ordinance provides for fines of up to 3,000 euros for the owners of dogs that do not collect the excrement of their pets from the public road.

The campaign is carried out in collaboration with El Puerto Veterinary Center, Nexo Puerto Lumbreras Veterinary Center, Nico Dog Rescue and Support Spain association and Animal Hotel, Canine and Training Residency.

In addition, the association of Professionals for Animal Defense (PRODA) has also collaborated in the project.
