New findings at the Nogalte Castle allow us to know more about its morphology (03/10/2018)

a company Inteligencia Inteligente, in collaboration with the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras and the participation of the young members of the I Campus of Archeology carried out last summer, have made archaeological interventions that have allowed new discoveries in Castillo de Nogalte.

A fortification that, although the oldest archaeological evidence of occupation goes back to the Bronze Age, both the materials recovered in the different excavations and its constructive characteristics could place it in the first half of the 13th century with Andalusian origins.

This last archaeological intervention "has made it possible to complete some of the information gaps with respect to its morphology".

This was stated by Juan Gallardo, director of Inteligencia Inteligente, who added that "the work carried out in the first campaign (2017) allowed us to document the remains of new walls that were considered lost due to the erosion of the mountain and even that they had not existed ", also showing the existence of" several housing spaces whose structures were attached to said wall line ".

The continuation of this investigation in 2018, carried out with young Lumbrerenses trained for the occasion, has allowed to continue documenting the wall line, as well as the different modifications of the space and obtaining materials that "allow us to date the last moment of use of the fortification in the part of the castle ".

In this way, the reflection of these new data leads to dating construction in the second half of the thirteenth century, without being able to materialize even with the materials appeared "if the population located in the fortification is Muslim, or are under the domain Christian".

According to the Councilor for Culture of the town, M.ª Victoria Jerez, at this moment, the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras manages the future of these new pieces with the intention that they remain in the municipality with the purpose of completing their Museum Hall as well as continue to expand research and search for new heritage elements.

"The continuation of the research work in the future would allow us to document the moment of construction of the fortification, since under the pavements dated in the second half of the 13th century we have been able to document the presence of other pavements and, therefore, are of dates before the historical moment to which we are referring, "Gallardo points out.

A fundamental fact since it could redefine the construction moment of the Lumbrerense fortification.
