The PP requests to provide more water resources to Puerto Lumbreras in the PH of the Segura River Basin Today, in the Committee on Environment and Climate Change, in the Senate (20/09/2017)

Possible transfers may be made by increasing non-conventional resources from existing desalination plants or by proposing to include in the NHP the necessary transfers from other river basin districts

The senator for Murcia, Pedro Jose Perez, states that "Puerto Lumbreras has traditionally suffered from a severe shortage of water resources and has been supplied by underground aquifers, currently overexploited"

"Water in Puerto Lumbreras is a priority and is the engine of our citizens' work"

The Popular Parliamentary Group in the Senate on Wednesday requested, through a motion approved by a large majority, the provision to the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras of an increase of water resources, in the Hydrological Plan of the Segura River Basin, that allow to irrigate their farms.

This has been exposed by the Senator for Murcia, Pedro José Pérez, during the Committee on Environment and Climate Change, where he stressed that "Puerto Lumbreras has traditionally suffered from a severe lack of water resources and has been supplied by underground aquifers, currently overexploited, and of insufficient contributions derived from the purification waters. "

"And what is more significant has added - is that Puerto Lumbreras does not have the endowment from the transfer Tajo-Segura, although it runs through it."

The municipality of Puerto Lumbreras is basically an agricultural and livestock territory, counting on an agri-food sector that constitutes an important economic engine of employment and wealth.

The primary sector represents more than 60% of the local economy.

At this point, the popular senator recalled that the Water Law sets the general objectives of hydrological planning, trying to "achieve the best satisfaction of water demands and balance and harmonize regional and sectoral development, increasing the availability of resources , protecting its quality, economizing its use and rationalizing its uses in harmony with the environment and other natural resources.

In this sense, it has also explained that, in accordance with what was collected in the Agricultural Demand Unit (UDA), the Community of Irrigators of Puerto Lumbreras presents a gross demand for water resources that amounts to 7.63 Hm3 / year.

At present, its application deficit is 1.40 Hm3 / year, the largest of all communities of irrigators and users in the UDA.

WATER IS A PRIORITY

"All this does not only highlight the need for new water inputs, which must surely come from other river basins," said Pedro José Pérez.

The second point of the PP motion urges the Executive to include the water needs of Puerto Lumbreras in the PH of the Segura River Basin.

The text of the initiative states that if the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras is to be provided with more water resources, this could be achieved either by increasing non-conventional resources from existing desalination plants in the Segura hydrographic basin or by transferring other demarcations.

"We simply demand that we transfer the water left over in other basins, that the wet Spain transfer water to dry Spain."

Throughout his speech, the Government explained, and in accordance with the timetable set by the EU Water Framework Directive "the preparation of the third cycle of hydrological planning has begun".

Finally, Pedro José Pérez has stressed that "water in Puerto Lumbreras is a priority and is the engine of the work of our citizens."
