Promote healthy eating habits among schoolchildren in Puerto Lumbreras (22/11/2017)

Students of 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade of Primary Education of the public schools of Puerto Lumbreras join the "Brocolín" project, whose purpose is to promote healthy eating habits among the youngest children.

The objective of the project is for the youngest to recognize the importance of healthy eating, and to be aware of the benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables, as is the case with broccoli.

It is an activity created by Sakata Seed Ibérica (company dedicated to the sale of seeds) and framed within its platform "Broccoli Passion", in collaboration with the Department of Education of the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras and Cooperativa Agrícola Sacoje, producer of Broccoli.

Through the project, pedagogical workshops are developed with an approximate duration of 45 minutes, aimed at students between 6 and 8 years.

First, there has been a brief introduction about the importance of a balanced diet, especially at your age.

The introduction has been accompanied by the game of colors, which allows you to assess your knowledge of fruits and vegetables and discuss the different types.

Next, the children have read the story "The adventures of Brocolín".

During the reading, the importance of feeding in a healthy way through the story of Brocolín and his friends has been insisted on.

It should be noted that part of the team of this project consists of three players from the football team Lorca Féminas, to emphasize the importance that a good diet must be accompanied by sports.

Afterwards, the students have been encouraged to touch, feel and smell a real vegetable, a broccoli.

Finally, the possibility has been offered to children to participate in a contest.

The workshop ends at home, encouraging the involvement of families, since the students are given a broccoli and a recipe book.

By cooking broccoli with your parents you can win a stuffed Brocolin.

The Councilor for Education, Sonia Lopez, explained that "during the course of the day the students have learned the importance of a balanced diet with fun activities such as games, songs and storytelling. From the City Council we want to reinforce the importance of carrying a balanced diet to avoid bad eating habits and sedentary activity that can cause great problems in the health of young people ".

According to the latest studies, 45% of the child population suffers from obesity and overweight.

This seriously affects the growth and cognitive development (psychomotor disorders, decreased immune system, difficulty of attention, low self-esteem, decreased memory, sleep problems, hypertension ...) From Broccoli Passion collaborate to produce a change in the mentality of children , in order to improve their feeding methods.
