The City Council urges the EU legislative improvements that promote a return of the pig farms (09/06/2009)

The method of natural hydrolysis of pig carcasses in bunkers is now incorporated into the law and a recent study has indicated that promotes health conditions of livestock enterprises

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras in the last plenary session adopted a motion requesting the European Commission to amend the regulations to allow improvements in the legislation relating to pig farms that provide the natural hydrolysis process of the bodies of animals.

Specifically, it calls for the addition to European directives of a bunker for Pigs currently not part of Community law, which allows hydrolyze the bodies of animals and store the remains.

The move comes in anticipation of legislative changes that will affect the local pig farms, once from the month of June, farmers may be sanctioned if they do not have a system of containers for removal and transportation of corpses, which avoided natural hydrolysis system by bunkers, more efficient and comfortable for all those involved in the chain of production and distribution of pork products.

"Through this application, what we want from the City of Puerto Lumbreras is to support the pig farms with an alternative that promotes the health and economic conditions of this type of livestock, thus avoiding a daily transport of bodies leads health risks both on farms and the rest of the population, "said Councilman Rural Development, José María Parra.

According to research conducted by the University of Murcia, has been shown that the method of hydrolysis in bunkers is safe from the health point of view due to the safety of the hydrolyzate.

In addition, the new system favors the economic conditions of farming on the current recall system bodies through collection vehicles.

In this regard, Councillor for Rural Development, added that "the system favors economic conditions in the sector because they need transportation services once or twice a year when required to empty the tanks, thus preventing vehicles come to the farm daily to transport the bodies of animals, and promoting health and environmental conditions on farms, as the new transport would be professional and regulated to prevent health risks. "

In addition, the new method of sealed bunkers helps the environment by reducing drastically the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere and prevent a constant traffic of vehicles in rural areas.

The European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) has issued an opinion favorable to the new system of bunkers, and a reduction of health risk from the farms to reduce the possibility of transmission of infectious pathogens, and also causes less discomfort to the population and continued daily transport of carcasses from livestock farms.
