Puerto Lumbreras Launches Local Action Plan with more than 60 measures for sustainable development and reduction of CO2 emissions (02/05/2010)

Pedro Antonio Sanchez will come next Tuesday, May 4 at the Ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors in Brussels to reaffirm their commitment to the environment and present the Local Action Plan

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has launched a new Local Action Plan to promote sustainable development of the municipality.

The Plan will be developed between 2010 and 2020, is executed after the accession of Puerto Lumbreras the Covenant of Mayors which is the commitment of European local authorities to reduce by at least 20% of CO2 emissions.

"Puerto Lumbreras sustainable growth has become a basic objective of his government, and therefore we were the first town in Spain who accepted the challenge of the Covenant of Mayors.

Through this new Local Action Plan will implement specific measures in various areas to promote sustainable growth and reduce CO2 emissions, "said the Mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez.

Thus, the new Local Action Plan promoted by the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras includes more than 60 specific measures in various policy areas as energy, industry, water, transport and waste.

Specifically, the energy and industry sector, the Plan includes various measures such as implementation of systems that use clean and renewable energy in municipal facilities and equipment and in different sectors of the municipality, the rationalization of consumption of machinery and equipment municipal and optimize energy consumption in public lighting.

"Our commitment extends its action to all possible areas.

Energy efficiency, transport, expansion of green spaces, the promotion of rural tourism and incentives in the industry are some of our immediate priorities, "noted Sanchez.

On the other hand, in the transport sector, the City Council develops sustainable mobility plans in the city center, giving priority to public transport systems and non-motorized, most notably the Bicycle Master Plan so that this transport is a real alternative to private vehicles, including awareness campaigns to promote cycling and sustainable mobility.

Moreover, to reduce CO2 emissions as foreseen by the Covenant of Mayors, the municipality put in place measures aimed at reducing waste, such as the placement of container piles on sidewalks, drive products and recycled materials through the creation of an association of waste recovery, the promotion of separate collection of bulky waste and the implementation of new infrastructure and services for street cleaning to be accompanied by public awareness campaigns to promote sustainable consumption among all citizens of Puerto Lumbreras.

Ceremony Covenant of Mayors

The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, will come next Tuesday, May 4 at the official ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors 2010.

Puerto Lumbreras was the first Spanish town to join this initiative which links to European cities in a permanent network sharing and implementing best practices to improve energy efficiency in the urban environment.

In this annual event which is scheduled to attend mayors of several European cities, Sanchez will present the Plan of Action of Puerto Lumbreras in which the municipality intends to reduce CO2 emissions and combat climate change.

In this regard, Sanchez concluded explaining that "this new Local Action Plan will be combined with measures envisaged in Ecupuerto, which also adopts more than 150 measures to promote respect for the environment.

Once again Puerto Lumbreras offers innovative ways to become a green city. "
