Puerto Lumbreras reaffirms its commitment to the environment at the Official Ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors in Brussels (04/05/2010)

Pedro Antonio Sánchez has noted that the municipality prepare an Ordinance on Climate Change will launch reforestation and enable new green areas in the center of town

The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras and regional deputy, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, has attended the annual ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors in Brussels, where he presented the Local Action Plan has developed the town after becoming the first in Spain to join this plan, with which local authorities aim to reduce CO2 emissions and combat climate change together.

Among the actions that includes the new Local Action Plan of Puerto Lumbreras to be developed between 2010 and 2020 include measures for the conservation of existing forests, reforestation of degraded areas, creating a catalog of green areas through 'sink effect' can absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into oxygen, and the development of a list of native and exotic plant species to absorb more CO2.

It is also envisaged the introduction of crops as cover crops in the whole area of woody crop plantations and in the center of town, between rows of trees, as a "green belt" that will enhance the sink effect, as confirmed by international studies on the subject.

Thus, the council is firmly committed to respect for the environment to create a 'town green' for renewable energies, so that, so imminent, they will operate a new service of free bike aimed is to provide citizens with more transportation friendly environment.

According to Sanchez concluded, "these and other actions taken by the municipality are proof of the strong commitment of the government team within the local part of its strategy to combat climate change, a commitment that we believe strongly and in which we coordinated with the other municipalities adhering to this initiative across the European continent. "

Other measures

Specifically, the energy and industry sector, the Plan includes various measures such as implementation of systems that use clean and renewable energy in municipal facilities and equipment and in different sectors of the municipality, the rationalization of consumption of machinery and equipment municipal and optimize energy consumption in public lighting.

On the other hand, in the transport sector, the City Council develops sustainable mobility plans in the city center, giving priority to public transport systems and non-motorized, most notably the Bicycle Master Plan so that this transport is a real alternative to private vehicles, including awareness campaigns to promote cycling and sustainable mobility.

Moreover, to reduce CO2 emissions as foreseen by the Covenant of Mayors, the municipality put in place measures aimed at reducing waste, such as the placement of container piles on sidewalks, drive products and recycled materials through the creation of an association of waste recovery, the promotion of separate collection of bulky waste and the implementation of new infrastructure and services for street cleaning to be accompanied by public awareness campaigns that promote sustainable consumption among all citizens of Puerto Lumbreras.
