Puerto Lumbreras requests the European bonus WiFi4EU to provide free Wi-Fi service in more public spaces (14/05/2018)

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has just requested the European Union to be included in the WiFi4EU initiative.

A project with which the European Commission wants to promote wifi connectivity for all European citizens who pass through public spaces such as parks, squares, official buildings, libraries, health centers and museums throughout Europe.

If admitted, the town would have free wireless Internet access around the main centers of public life before 2020. Thus, the budget for the WiFi4EU initiative is 120 million euros between 2017 and 2019, which will be allocated to the installation of latest generation Wi-Fi equipment in these spaces.

The mayor of the town, María Ángeles Túnez, explained that "in Puerto Lumbreras we must take advantage of all available resources and our reach, being a priority to give as many facilities as possible to Lumbrerenses to be connected to the internet".

Currently, Puerto Lumbreras has a public network of internet access in five public spaces: Augusto Vels park, Reina Sofía park, La Estación-Esparragal library, Puerto Lumbreras library and 24-hour study room (Espacio Joven).

This service allows citizens to connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi or through public computers located in libraries.

To register in the service, it is necessary to register in advance in the electronic headquarters of the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras and request access.

If for any reason it is not possible to make this request through the Internet, you can request access to the service by being duly documented in the Computer Department of the City of Puerto Lumbreras, Monday through Friday from 08:00 to 15:00.

For its part, the president of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, explained that "so that everyone can benefit from connectivity should not matter where you live or how much you earn."

Puerto Lumbreras would thus access a financing bonus for a fixed amount of 15,000 euros, being able to select the centers where the WiFi4EU wireless access points will be installed, renewing the old material or replacing it with a newer and better quality.
