José Sosa Martínez gives name to an avenue in Puerto Lumbreras (09/07/2018)

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has put an avenue named after the former CEO of Barberet & Blanc, José Sosa Martínez, who died last year.

This recognition was made coinciding with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the independence of Puerto Lumbreras.

It should be noted that, along with this recognition, he has also been awarded the "Gold Medal for Posthumous Title" in the institutional act of July 7.

The mayor of the town, Mª Ángeles Túnez, stressed that "we wanted to publicly recognize the figure of José Sosa, since he was a tireless worker who generated new opportunities and contributed greatly to the economic progress of Puerto Lumbreras."

José Sosa, specialist in the field of floriculture, was born in Puerto Lumbreras in 1941. He emigrated to France and, after working on the harvest, moved to Nice, where he was responsible for almost a decade of the commercial management of the company 'Steiner Fleurs', dedicated to the sale of flowers produced on the French blue coast.

Thus, he commercialized flower for Europe from France and knew everything related to the cut flower trade.

At that stage he began his relationship with the owners and founders of the company Barberet Blanc, which is now installed in the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras.

The skills of José Sosa attracted the attention of Henri Blanc, creator with Alexander Barberet de Barberet & Blanc, a successful wholesaler of cuttings for flowers.

The company found in Lumbrerense the person they needed to expand their products in the southeast of Spain.

In 1974, Sosa returned to his hometown with the idea of growing flowers and, in particular, the carnation in his locality and throughout the Region.

The mayor explained that "Sosa stood out for his capacity for work, professionalism, commitment and generosity, he gave his whole life to floriculture and the development of new varieties of carnation, he has been a reference and an example to follow for many people."

Throughout his career Pepe Sosa has received a large number of public recognitions and awards for his commendable work.

These include the Diploma of Distinguished Services awarded by the City of Puerto Lumbreras in 2009 or more recently the Diploma of Distinguished Services of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia in 2013.
