Puerto Lumbreras hosts the first Archeology Campus in the Nogalte Castle (20/07/2018)

With the help of the young participants in this campus it has been possible to obtain new and interesting data about the history of Nogalte Castle

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras and the Inteligencia Inteligente company have organized the first edition of the Archeology Campus in the vicinity of the Nogalte Castle.

The mayor of the town, Maria Angeles Tunisia, and the Councilor for Culture and Tourism, Mª Victoria Jerez, have visited the students today coinciding with the open day.

Young people between 17 and 26 years old have participated in this innovative initiative that has been carried out from 9 to 20 July.

The archaeological excavation of the Castle has been developed in three sectors of the walled enclosure and its surroundings, following the archaeological methodology and directed by an experienced archaeologist.

The teachers have trained young people in the skills of field archeology in a practical way and with the active participation of students. The tasks that students have done are those of the archeology assistants.

Throughout the course, participants have assumed responsibilities, made decisions and interpreted the data that has been appearing.

In this sense, a person in charge of the area, called "Archaeologist of the day", has been established in a rotating manner, who has been in charge of assuming the tasks of the sector leader in a coordinated manner with the archaeologist, such as the stratigraphic sheets, bags of materials, photography, drawing, topography or even decision making.

The campus coordinator, Juan Gallardo, has highlighted the importance of this initiative that has already started with the activity 'Heritage Watchers' in schools and whose main objective is to promote knowledge and respect for local heritage.

According to Gallardo, with the help of young Lumbrerenses participants in this archaeological campus have managed to obtain new and interesting data on the history of the Castle of Nogalte.

Some elements that are going to allow, he assures, "to change a little the history", since they have found places of closing that had not been located until the moment due to the undergrowth and to the zone of unevenness in which they are located.

This is of vital importance within the archaeological investigations since, he adds, "we have begun to find the houses where the inhabitants of the fortress lived".

Among the pieces located in these new findings, Gallardo has highlighted "jars, pot, basin, jars, millstone, as well as another type of trousseau and unique ceramic materials."

As a secondary activity, the campus has included "Cabinet Archeology" in the facilities of the Cultural and Creative Enterprises Nursery of Puerto Lumbreras in the afternoon.

In order to complement field work and delve into archaeological research, participants have attended different workshops related to material washing, inventory of materials, drawing materials and archaeological interpretation.

On the other hand, the Campus has incorporated complementary activities among which stand out talk with experts, archaeological visit to the Castle of Nogalte, archaeological prospecting of the surroundings of the Castle of Nogalte and day of open doors with exhibition of the results.

The mayor of Puerto Lumbreras stressed that "this initiative has been a great experience for young people, since they have fun while they have expanded their knowledge about the history and archaeological heritage of the municipality."
