The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has begun to install information signals that warn of the presence of cyclists in the road and the need to maintain the safety distance on roads in the municipality.
It is a rectangular sign that reminds drivers of the obligation to leave a minimum safety distance of one and a half meters between the vehicle and the bicycle when overtaking.
This initiative has been launched on the urban roads most frequented by cyclists in order to ensure road safety, prevent accidents and improve coexistence among cyclists, vehicles and pedestrians.
The Councilor for Sports, Juan Rubén Burrueco, explained that "we have considered it convenient to promote this measure in the busiest places to practice this sport due to the large influx of cyclists in our town."
Specifically, the signs are being placed on the road that connects the urban center with the hamlet of La Estación-Esparragal, on the road that connects Puerto Lumbreras and the hamlet of Almendricos lorquina, as well as on the roads of the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras that communicate with Águilas, Lorca and Vélez Rubio.
It should be noted that this measure was approved at the last Municipal Assembly, which also agreed to urge the Governing Council to promote road safety education in schools as one of the best measures for the prevention of accidents and the promotion of behavior suitable on the road.
In addition, the City Council also urged the Governing Council to, through the General Directorate of Local Administration and in collaboration with the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia, carry out activities to promote safety and respect for the figure of the cyclist.
