The Municipal Council asks for help for the restoration of the Nogalte Castle (02/11/2018)

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has just requested assistance from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture for the restoration and reinforcement of the walls of the Nogalte Castle.

With a total budget of 81,117.54 euros, the requested subsidy amounts to 55,000 euros.

A money that would be invested over five months in tasks that pretend to be carried out in different points of the fortification, focusing mainly on the walls, which are practically the total of the original elements visible today.

The project also plans to carry out restoration works in the triacodada door, as well as in the area where the archaeological excavations carried out during 2017 and 2018 have been focused on documenting and recovering, "with very positive results", the wall cloth, according to the declared competent technicians from the drafting of the project.

Thus, the main activities to be developed in this project would focus "on the volumetric reintegration of the wall at the eastern end of the Castle through the recovery of canvas applying original construction techniques," points out the Councilor for Culture, María Victoria Jerez, " as well as interventions in the zone of the triacodada door to stop its deterioration, volumically recover what was lost and apply solutions that avoid the reproduction of such degradation ".

To this must be added actions in the meetings between original and contemporary walls to address the original mass loss situation by disintegration caused by meteorological agents, as well as cracks and some landslides.

From the facultative direction of the project, archaeologist Juan Gallardo Carrillo has highlighted as one of the main criteria to be followed for an intervention that allows to stop the accelerated process of deterioration suffered by most of the fortification, a minimal intervention: "The most Respectful with the archaeological site approaches Ruskin's theory defending the non-intervention and maintenance of the ruin as the purest way to make clear the passage of time on the building in question. "

This has added that "the proposed intervention will restore the identity values of the work" because, he adds, due to the current deterioration of the remains of the wall (in some area with a height of less than 10 cm) makes it difficult interpretation, "so that it is of vital importance for the work team to help promote the identity and value of the monument with the volumetric reintegration and thus return to the visitor the legibility of the original layout of the fortification and its monumental scale".

Other criteria stipulated by this interdisciplinary team consisting of a wide range of professionals from different disciplines are the recovery of volumes as an eminently reversible action whose purpose is the protection and facilitation of the reading of the monument, as well as attention to materiality, distinguishing between what belonged to the old building and what not with the aim of not falling into the false history.
