Puerto Lumbreras arrives at FITUR as the only municipality in the Region with 'Starlight Star Park' (24/01/2019)

In addition, the City of Puerto Lumbreras has taken advantage of the presence in Fitur to make known a varied tasting of local products

The Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory arrives at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) as the first place in the Region of Murcia certified Starlight Starlight Park.

The mayor of the town, Mª Ángeles Túnez, announced at FITUR that "Puerto Lumbreras is the only place in the Region of Murcia certified as Starlight Star Park".

Tunisia has indicated that "we have incorporated observation of the stars as part of our natural, landscape, cultural and scientific heritage, being protected from light pollution, the Lumbrerense Observatory is especially suitable for tourism activities with the sky as a natural resource."

The qualification 'Starlight' accredits the suitability of the places for the observation of the stars in optimal conditions, besides representing an example of protection and conservation.

The certification allows, for the first time, to combine science and tourism.

For this, it takes advantage of astronomy and the vision of the sky as a tool for a new form of sustainable tourism.

The Starlight Certification System is supported by UNESCO, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the Knowledge Network of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), for the protection of the night skies and, in addition, to promote scientific values, natural and landscape associated.

The installation is located 7 kilometers from Puerto Lumbreras, about 800 meters above sea level.

It is an open space, warm and without interferences that obstruct the vision.

The Observatory has an automated dome 310 cm in diameter equipped with a MEADE telescope of 355 mm opening and 3556 mm focal length.

In the same way, this installation houses a high-quality solar telescope to expand the use of facilities with daytime activities, and an audiovisual room equipped for talks, conferences and courses.

From the Observatory, visitors can see the cosmos through a modern and powerful telescope.

The quality of its night skies, away from the city, its clean and turbulent atmosphere guarantees perfect visibility on 90% of summer nights.

For this year, it is planned to carry out scientific outreach activities, including training courses in astronomy and guided night visits.

The Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia will make visits and observations on the last Saturday of each month, as well as visits every Wednesday and Saturday from June 15 to September 15.

They will also guide the visits of the educational centers and those associations or groups that request it.

In the most outstanding rain of stars, the Perseids or Tears of San Lorenzo, there will also be a specialized observation from 10 to 14 August.

In addition to the Starlight Star Park, people who decide to visit the Cabezo de la Jara Natural Park can visit the astronomical trails, the Interpretation Center of Nature and the Youth Hostel.

The path recreates the solar system to scale in 1,500 meters of route and incorporates two solar watches and one lunar along the route.

To conclude, Tunisia has highlighted that "from the City we promote astrotourism as an excellent alternative with which to diversify our tourist offer and reduce seasonality."

Tasting of local products

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has taken advantage of the presence in Fitur to make known a varied tasting of local products at the stand of the Region of Murcia.

During the day, visitors have tasted typical local artisan products such as cheese, oil, beer or bread, among others.

"People from different parts of the country and from outside Spain have had the opportunity to taste our gastronomy and know the tourist resources of the area", explained the Councilor for Tourism, Mª Victoria Jerez

The tasting was carried out in collaboration with Quesería Artesanal 'El Pipas', Almazara 'San Diego', 'Nuestra Señora del Rosario' Bakery and 'El Cantero' Brewery.
