Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory, most visited place in 2018 in Puerto Lumbreras (23/02/2019)

The Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory has been the most visited place in the municipality in 2018, as reflected in the data provided by the Tourism Office of the municipality.

1,988 people climbed the Cabezo de la Jara natural spot to watch the stars last year.

For its part, the second place is occupied very closely by the Nogalte Castle with its themed cave-houses, registering 1,948 visits.

The Councilor for Culture and Tourism, Mª Victoria Jerez, stressed that "the excellent state of the facilities and the unique and privileged enclave to enjoy the cosmos are some of the reasons why the Astronomical Observatory attracts visitors".

Located in the natural area of Jabezo de la Jara, 7 kilometers from the city center and 800 meters above sea level, the Observatoriolumbrerense is in an ideal location for observing the sky, with unique facilities throughout the Region of Murcia.

Members of the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia, Astromurcia, are responsible for accompanying visitors in this special experience. The Councilor for Tourism, Mª Victoria Jerez, has been satisfied by the data obtained and has encouraged those Lumbrerenses and visitors who have not yet been or who want to repeat the experience to move to the natural place to know the stars.

He also explained that "from this Observatory, citizens will be able to see the cosmos through a modern and powerful telescope". To this he added that "the quality of the night skies, away from the city, its clean atmosphere and without turbulence guarantees a Perfect visibility on 90% of summer nights. "

The Observatory has an automated dome 310 cm in diameter equipped with a MEADE 355 mm telescope and 3556 mm focal length.

Similarly, this installation houses a high-quality solar telescope to expand the use of facilities with daytime activities, and an audiovisual room equipped for lectures, lectures and courses. The ObservatoryAstronomicalCabezo de laJarase is one of the largest and with least light pollution of the Region of Murcia.

It is worth noting that since last January, the Observatory of Puerto Lumbreras has become the first place in the Region of Murcia certified Starlight Starlight Park.

The qualification 'Starlight' accredits the suitability of the places for the observation of the stars in optimal conditions, besides representing an example of protection and conservation.

The Starlight Certification System is supported by UNESCO, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the Knowledge Network of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The certification allows, for the first time, to combine science and tourism.

For this, it takes advantage of astronomy and the vision of the sky as a tool for a new form of sustainable tourism.

Those interested in visiting the Observatory should make their reservations at the Tourist Office, at 652 902 268/968 43 61 53 or at the mail of tourism@puertolumbreras.es.

The price per person is 2.5 euros and children under 10 have free admission.
