The mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, M ª Angeles Túnez, and the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Ángel del Amor, today inaugurated the Disinfection Center of Livestock Transport Vehicles by road, which has been remodeled and already works full performance.

The Autonomous Community, in collaboration with the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras, worked together to improve and reform these facilities.

The regional government, aware of the importance of the development of investments in this area and the limitation of municipal resources to meet the expenses derived from the investment, granted a subsidy of 30,000 euros to the City Council for the reform and adaptation to the current regulations of the Cleaning and Disinfection Center of Livestock Vehicles.

The mayor of the town, M ª Angeles Tunisia, stressed that "this action has been very demanded by the neighbors, as Puerto Lumbreras is a strategic point of livestock production to have a large number of farms that generate a large transit of vehicles by highway".

"The vehicles dedicated to road transport in the livestock sector are an important link in livestock production and health, assuming the displacement of these vehicles a risk in the spread and spread of infectious diseases of animals," he underlined Mª Ángeles Tunisia.

These centers carry a great sanitary work since "they avoid the spread and the contagion of diseases like the African Swine Fever or the Foot-and-Mouth Disease, eradicated in our Region but very present both in Central Europe and in the North of Africa and that are a constant threat, "Del Amor explained.

The Law 8/2003, of April 24, of animal health establishes in article 49, that the vehicles or means of transport used, once the animals are unloaded, must be cleaned and disinfected in the cleaning and disinfection center more nearby enabled for that purpose.

The control of animal health, goes to assess in an integral way all the factors that can influence the appearance, development and spread of a disease or plague.

Therefore, "the cleaning and disinfection of transport vehicles of live animals, products for animal feed and by-products of animal origin is of great importance," said the counselor.

The locality of Puerto Lumbreras is characterized by its high cattle density, there are more than 450 livestock farms of all species, highlighting sheep, goats and pigs.

In addition, a weekly sheep and goat market is held and various fairs and horse competitions are held throughout the year.

It has registered about 130 vehicles transporting live animals.

Finally, the mayor has pointed out that "as of now the vehicles that discharges animals and the transport of animal feed products and animal byproducts will not have to travel to neighboring municipalities for cleaning and disinfection" .

Meeting with the Irrigators Community

Before finalizing the visit to the municipality, the counselor and the mayor have met with representatives of the Community of Irrigators of Puerto Lumbreras to listen to their proposals and show their support to this entity.

The mayor has reaffirmed its commitment to "work together in the defense of farmers and ranchers who develop their activity on irrigated land."

55% of direct and indirect jobs in the municipality, as well as 70% of total revenues (GDP), correspond directly to the primary sector.

Currently, Puerto Lumbreras has one of the highest employment rates in the Region of Murcia with 90%.

Undoubtedly, supported by a traditional sector, the agricultural and livestock sector.
