Puerto Lumbreras reopens the center for cleaning and disinfection of animal transport vehicles (25/02/2019)

The regional government has invested 30,000 euros in the reopening of the center for cleaning and disinfection of animal transport vehicles in Puerto Lumbreras, in order to prevent the spread and spread of diseases such as African Swine Fever or Foot-and-Mouth Disease, eradicated in the Region but very present both in central Europe and in North Africa, and which are a constant threat.

The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Ángel del Amor, today opened this center where he stated that "animal health is considered a key factor for the development of livestock and is vital transcendence, both for the regional economy and for public health, to prevent the possible transmission of animal diseases to people ".

The opening of this center, which is adapted to the current regulations, covers the needs of disinfection of an area of high livestock density, since the municipality harbors in a radius of 145 square kilometers more than 450 farms, highlighting the sheep, the goat and pig

So far, the farmers of the area were forced to move to neighboring municipalities, within and outside the region, increasing the cost of mandatory cleaning and disinfection to those concerned.

With the opening of this center, "not only vehicles from the region will be received, but also from the neighboring areas and municipalities of Almeria," Del Amor added.

The control of animal health involves assessing in an integral way all the factors that may influence the appearance, development and spread of a disease or plague.

Therefore, "the cleaning and disinfection of transport vehicles of live animals, products for animal feed and by-products of animal origin is of great importance," said the counselor.

The Region has 68 centers of this type, 9 public, 38 private and 21 restricted centers, destined to vehicles that transport animals to slaughter.

The Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries supervises and controls the proper functioning of these centers through their veterinary inspectors, as a guarantee of an adequate maintenance of regional animal health.

The Animal Health Law establishes that the vehicles or means of transport used, once the animals have been unloaded, must be cleaned and disinfected at the nearest cleaning and disinfection center enabled for that purpose.
