REVIEW: Title of the news too long 03/07/2019 14:08:39 (03/07/2019)

This morning a press conference convened by the Community of Irrigators of Puerto Lumbreras was held to present the more than 3,200 signatures collected in defense of our agricultural and livestock sector and against the macro-projects of photovoltaic solar power plants in areas of irrigation.

It was held in the plenary hall of the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras, with a large influx of public, having attended as speakers Mr. Miguel Padilla, President of the Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Cattle Ranchers of the Region of Murcia (COAG), D. Miguel Ángel Martínez-Aroca, President of the National Association of Photovoltaic Energy Producers (ANPIER), all representatives of the political forces of the municipality, Ms. María Angeles Tunisia, Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Ms. María Rosa García López, General Secretary of the PSOE, Mr. Victoriano Jesús Romera Mateos, General Secretary of IU-Los Verdes, Ms. Inmaculada García Arcos, General Secretary of VOX, and representatives of the Community of Irrigators of Puerto Lumbreras Mr. Antonio Martínez Reverte, President, and D. Antonio Díaz Martínez Vice President.

All have shown their unconditional support to our irrigated agriculture and our livestock (sectors that contribute more than 60% of the GDP of the municipality) to continue having a decisive role in the structuring of the territory, establishing active population, maintaining and creating employment, allowing the diversification of the productions and contributing to the ordering and socioeconomic development of the municipality, and continue being the base of our culture, idiosyncrasy and identity;

defending the sectors that guarantee employment, progress, wellbeing and development in Puerto Lumbreras, and against the installation of macro-solar photovoltaic plants in irrigation, which occupy and fill a large amount of land for irrigated agriculture (base of our economy) ), which also create social and political tensions, exploiting the sun of the region and often being foreign investment funds the beneficiaries of them.

In addition they fill the distribution networks, preventing other photovoltaic plants of self-consumption or of smaller spillage to network can be installed.

We have an obligation to defend the development of renewable energy but not at any price or at the expense of sectors such as irrigated agriculture that are economically sustainable and also act as a CO2 sink.

With this type of macro-projects, in the irrigation of Puerto Lumbreras would be lost some very scarce land, the effort and work of several generations, investments close to 50 million euros that have been made to modernize the irrigation and provide water to these lands, and thousands of jobs.

All have concluded in this press conference that we are here today defending what we are as a people and what this people has achieved through their work, dedication and effort.
