The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras will promote a museum hall for next year after the archaeological finds in the Nogalte Castle (24/07/2019)

A new open day brings the great historical value of Lumbrerense to adults and children on the closing day of the II Archaeological Campus of Puerto Lumbreras

The mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, María Ángeles Tunisia, together with the Councilor for Tourism and Heritage, Antonia María Navarro, and the Councilor for Education and Youth;

José Manuel Sánchez, today visited the Nogalte Castle, where the archaeological works directed by Juan Gallardo and José Manuel Crespo have been completed, through the II Puerto Lumbreras Archeology Campus held from July 9 to 24.

An initiative that has had the presence of up to 14 students, who have been introduced to the world of archeology and cultural heritage through field work in the field, and laboratory work and lectures of different subjects.

As for the scientific objectives set before the excavation was carried out, archaeologists indicate that they are very positive, since according to the Campus Director, Juan Gallardo, "since the restart of the research already in 2017, progress has been made much with regard to the recovery of the wall line that would close the lower enclosure from its eastern part and that it was assumed that there were no vestiges left, having obtained as a result in this campaign the registration of said wall cloth at various points of the land, although there is still a large volume of sediment to be removed to recover it completely. "

Likewise, the archaeological works in the interior area of the fortification have allowed to expand the excavation area, almost doubling the meters that were available after the two previous campaigns, also obtaining important results about the functionalities of the spaces, locating several dependencies for domestic use, mainly kitchens, as well as their accesses, which allows us to begin to glimpse the spatial distribution enjoyed by the inhabitants of the Nogalte castle in this sector of the lower enclosure at the end of the 13th and early 14th centuries.

In this way many of the hypotheses that were raised have been resolved, although new ones have emerged based on the superposition of structures that are documented in different spaces and that indicates the existence of a chronologically prior use of the fortified enclosure that was thought until the moment.

The successes of this campaign and the great archaeological and historical value of the materials and infrastructures that have seen the light, makes, as announced by the Councilor for Tourism and Heritage;

Antonia María Navarro, "future projects and work will be put into operation immediately, through a project funded by the Regional Government and in which the City of Puerto Lumbreras also makes an important contribution."

These works will consist of another new archaeological excavation, study work on the consolidations and restoration of found remains and in this way make them accessible.

"Without a doubt these works and findings will be the germ of a future museum hall that we will try to launch by the beginning of the year 2020, through which we can all know and enjoy our heritage, our history and our culture," said Antonia Maria Navarro

"One of the great objectives of this legislature is to get the archaeological remains found in Puerto Lumbreras to stay here and with them a municipal archaeological museum is achieved, for which we are already looking for financing through European funds," concluded the councilor of Tourism and Heritage.
