The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia has developed the operation JAQUE MATE, an investigation to clarify the intended fire of more than fifty containers of waste and urban furniture, occurred during the night of 'Halloween' last year in the municipality Puerto Lumbreras, which has resulted in the arrest of 21 young people and the investigation of three others, 10 of them minors and local residents, as alleged perpetrators of the crimes of public disorders and fire damage.

The events took place on the night of October 31 to November 1 of last year, when a group of young people dressed in balaclavas began a series of continuous burning of waste containers and urban furniture in different streets of the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras .

The agents of the Civil Guard, the Local Police and Civil Protection personnel of the municipality had to deal with numerous incidents that caused a serious social alarm among the neighbors, due to the continuity with which the fires were occurring and fear that the fire could spread and affect nearby vehicles and buildings.

Because of some of these fires, several streets in the town had to be cut off to traffic, since the burning containers were placed blocking the passage, as a barricade, which generated greater social alarm.

The evidence obtained in the different criminal scenarios allowed us to determine that the cause of the fire of the 51 waste and urban furniture containers was intentional, with an economic estimate valued at more than 30,000 euros.

Since then, the Benemérita initiated an investigation aimed at obtaining the greatest number of clues, testimonies and vestiges that would allow the bulky group of young people involved in the claims to be identified.

Organized youth group

As a result of the information obtained, the Civil Guard concluded that the actions of the suspects were systematic, organized and with a preconceived strategy in such a way that, according to the investigation, they formed coordinated groups, camouflaged with dark clothes and balaclavas, to address effectively the objectives that had been previously selected.

Thanks to the exhaustive investigation, the Civil Guard was identifying each of the suspects who maintained, during that early morning, a fluid coordination with the use of new technologies to speed up their movements and avoid being caught 'in fraganti'.

In this way, and from midnight on October 31 until 05:00 the next day, they carried out an agile tactic to commit, continuously, numerous accidents in urban furniture.

After several months of investigation, the Civil Guard has completed the JAQUE MATE operation with the staggered arrest of 21 young people, nine of them minors, aged between 19 and 27, of Spanish nationality and residents of Puerto Lumbreras, as alleged perpetrators of the crimes of public disorders and fire damage.

Three other young people, one of them underage, have been investigated for the alleged authorship of the crimes clarified.

The penalties with which the Criminal Code punishes the authorship of both criminal types are aggravated, in the case of the crime of public disorders, for the concealment of identity through disguise and, in the case of intentional fire, for endangering life or life. physical integrity of people.

The arrested and the proceedings have been made available to the Court of Instruction No. 2 of Lorca and the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office of Murcia.
