Cut flower and ornamental plant sector (01/04/2020)

The mayor urges the approval of a law decree with measures such as reducing VAT to four percent, enabling five-year loans without interest or the full rebate of Social Security payments for one year.

The Puerto Lumbreras City Council requests the central government to help the cut flower sector of the municipality affected by the health crisis.

The mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, María Ángeles Tunisia, has shown municipal support for companies from Lumbre in the cut flower and ornamental plant sector, as well as flower growers, noting that "the cut flower sector has been one of those most affected in the town by the closure decree imposed by the coronavirus, and more than 25 companies in Puerto Lumbreras have had to cease their activity in compliance with the state of alarm. "

A sector that generated between seedlings, nurseries, producers and marketers around 750 direct and indirect jobs.

The mayor maintains permanent contact with some of the companies, which have lost all production from March onwards.

They tell us that "they have cold rooms full of flowers, which are going to go to the garbage, to the detriment of both producers and marketers as well as collaborating farmers. The losses are considerable given that all the orders that have been canceled they had, having canceled the celebration of traditional festivals such as Easter, San José, Fallas de Valencia or Bando de la Huerta de Murcia ".

For this reason, it has requested the Government of Spain "to listen to the sector and attend to its demands" and to take "extraordinary" measures for flower growers.

In this sense, it urges the approval of a law decree with measures such as reducing VAT to four percent, enabling five-year loans without interest or the full rebate of Social Security payments for one year.

It is a very important sector for the social economy, given that the vast majority of productions are managed by family units, which cannot receive any type of aid or ERTE and whose economic losses are in the millions.
