The markets of Puerto Lumbreras and El Esparragal will gradually open from May 11 and with strict security measures (30/04/2020)

Next week there will be a meeting between the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras, the Lorca Regional Confederation of Business Organizations (CECLOR) and the Association of Street Vendors, to plan the implementation of the weekly markets with the appropriate security measures, in addition to transfer the proposals of these associations to reactivate the sector. The local markets on Fridays in Puerto Lumbreras and Sundays in El Esparragal may open from the week of May 11, when Phase I of the de-escalation plan approved by the Ministry of Health is launched.

The opening must be approved by the city council, and under strict conditions: distance between posts, and a delimitation of the space that allows for capacity checks at the entrances by Local Police.

The number of posts is reduced to 25% of the usual posts, or to an increase in the occupied area to ensure the maintenance of a safety distance between posts and pedestrians.

The arrival of sellers from other provinces is not allowed.

According to the indicative timetable, this first phase could be approved in mid-May, and be done gradually.First, they will open the stalls of the sectors that remain open, such as supermarkets, drugstores, butchers or greengrocers. According to evolution and already in phase 2, the number of positions that can operate can be expanded to 1/3 part of the usual ones, or a similar separation distance with increased surface area, with the measures indicated in Phase I, while in the Phase 3 may increase their activity until they reach 50% of the posts or an increase in the surface that allows a similar distance between posts, at the discretion of the municipalities that must guarantee the safety distance of 2 meters between people. Next week a meeting will be held between the Puerto Lumbreras City Council, the Lorca Regional Confederation of Business Organizations (CECLOR) and the Association of Street Vendors, to plan the start-up of the weekly markets with the appropriate security measures, in addition to transfer the proposals of these associations to reactivate the sector.

Measures that will add to those already taken by the local consistory, such as exemption from the payment of the fee to the vendors of markets and squares that have not had the opportunity to reopen their usual positions during the state of alarm, and that the City Council is studying expand this initiative throughout the year 2020. In Puerto Lumbreras, local markets are deeply rooted, being one of the economic engines of the town and a point of commercialization for local agriculture.

Today the Spanish Society of Community Nutrition (SENC) has prepared a document with suggestions for a healthy and committed purchase, with the aim of raising awareness and guiding citizens to prioritize the purchase of local products and services in municipal or local markets and in neighborhood stores or establishments that include local or proximity products in their offer.

The SENC recommends the consumption of food from the closest environment and of national production, "to help avoid the disappearance of many small businesses, local markets, family businesses or initiatives linked to the primary sector of our town.A campaign supported by the Department of Markets and Department of Commerce of the Puerto Lumbreras City Council under the motto #yocomproenelPuerto.
