Puerto Lumbreras leads the sale of this variety of plant, taking care of 70 percent of the total of those that are marketed in Spain and Portugal, so that 2 out of 3 poinsettias that are distributed in these countries, have passed through the municipality lumbrerense.
"It is an ornamental plant that mainly decorates many homes at Christmas,shops and public buildings, and that each year increases its sales, in a key sector in the economy of Puerto Lumbreras, and that generates around 750 direct and indirect jobs, "said the mayor, María Ángeles Tunisia. The Barberet & Blanc company was created in 1947, and today it has also become the world's leading breeder and producer of carnation cuttings.
With a marked family imprint and commitment to the employment of municipal workers, its cuttings production center has 12 hectares of heated greenhouses, 4,000 cubic meters of cold rooms, 1.2 hectares of research greenhouse, 1,050 square meters laboratory and 1,680 square meters of warehouse.
