Puerto Lumbreras celebrates World Day without Snuff (31/05/2016)

On the occasion of the celebration of World No Snuff, the Department of Health of the City of Puerto Lumbreras it has launched a series of activities to raise awareness of the risks associated with consumption of snuff.

Specifically, the City Council has installed a stand which has been distributed informational materials about the benefits of not using snuff and smoking cessation advice.

In addition, citizens have changed their cigarettes pieces of fruit, lollipops and bonds to the swimming pool.

Similarly, the lumbrerenses have also had the opportunity to become spirometry, free of charge, to determine the lung capacity and diagnose chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

On the other hand, on Friday June 3, workshops for children and young people who will be informed of the dangers that smoking causes will be made.

Thus, attendees will perform activities enabling them to know what happens in the lungs of a smoker and may participate in a drawing competition with messages on World No Snuff.

In this sense, the Councillor for Health, Andrés López, explained that "these initiatives aim to promote healthy habits and raise public awareness of the risks of snuff consumption in the adult and adolescent population."

Notably, the percentage of people who have not been started in the consumption of snuff in the region is 50%, one point above the average for Spain (49%), according to the latest European Health Survey Spain.

However, 28.4% of Murcia are smokers compared with 25.4% of the whole country.

That almost a third of the population smoking in the region, 25.6% do so daily and 2.9% occasionally.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that the consumption of snuff is one of the leading preventable causes of death and passive smoking adversely affects the health of people.
