Puerto Lumbreras celebrates the International Day of the Gypsy People (06/04/2017)

On Saturday, April 8 at 11:30 a manifesto will be read to commemorate this world day.

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras celebrates for the first time different commemorative acts, coinciding with the commemoration of the International Day of the Gypsy People.

In particular, this morning the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Mª Ángeles Tunisia, and the provincial coordinator of Fundación Secretariado Gitano Murcia, Ascensión Parra, have presided over the act of raising the flag of the gypsy community with the official gypsy background anthem in the Garden of Paco Rabal.

The act has been enlivened by a flamenco dancer from the flamenco association Riá Pitá.

The mayor explained that "with this type of initiatives we intend to improve the knowledge of Gypsy culture among citizens and show the cultural roots of this group in our municipality."

The activities continue this afternoon from 16.00 with a talk on the history of the gypsy people and a day of coexistence in the old municipal nursery.

On the other hand, tomorrow will be distributed information on the history of the gypsy people in the weekly market.

In addition, poems will be recited and citizens will draw with hand paint the flag of the gypsy people.

Likewise, on Saturday, April 8 a manifesto will be read to commemorate this world day at 11.30 am at the Young Space Gate.

Mª Ángeles Tunisia explained that "we want all citizens to join in this celebration in which the Roma community is recognized as part of our citizenship, remembering its history, valuing its contributions to the construction of our society and demanding the guarantee of the Equality right".

Within the commitment of the City of Puerto Lumbreras for the integration and the fight against discrimination in the municipality, from the Department of Social Services have been launched numerous services.

Among them is the "Currélatelo" employment program to improve the employment opportunities of the gypsy community, the children's playroom service, reading and writing workshops and road safety workshops aimed at the gypsy community.

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras approved a motion in the last ordinary plenary session to commemorate and recognize the contribution of the gypsy people to society.

In addition, in the motion, the City Council shows its clear position against all kinds of xenophobic and racist behavior, and calls on all peoples and cultures to live together with respect.

It should be noted that the International Day of the Gypsy People is celebrated in memory of the First Roma / Gypsy World Congress, held in London on 8 April 1971, in which the flag and the official gypsy anthem were instituted.

The flag is green and blue, symbolizing the sky and the field, with a red carriage wheel in the center, symbolizing the road from India and freedom.

The gypsy anthem was composed by Jarko Jovanovicy remembers the gypsies and gypsies victims of Nazism.
