The Municipal Plenary has approved a motion requesting the accession of Puerto Lumbreras to the "Mayors for Peace" network, whose objective is to promote an international demand for a world in peace and free of nuclear weapons.
Mayors for Peace is a network of cities, promoted by Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which currently has more than 7,000 municipalities in 161 countries around the world.
Its aim is the elimination of nuclear weapons in 2020, the date of the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
In this way, the Municipal Plenary has agreed to express its support for the objectives of this network and put in place the necessary procedures for joining the international network, which already has the presence of almost 300 Spanish municipalities.
Likewise, they have also agreed to disseminate and contribute to a better understanding among citizens of the work carried out in favor of the peace of United Cities and Local Governments and Mayors for Peace.
The mayor of the town, Mª Ángeles Tunisia, explained that "the main mission of Mayors for Peace is to create a climate of solidarity and facilitate communication between the cities that support the program."
In addition, he added that "being part of this network entails the commitment to defend coexistence in equality and without violence, working through educational centers and with society in general."
The main objective of this network is to work at the international level to raise the awareness of countries regarding the abolition of nuclear weapons.
It also directs its efforts to achieve lasting peace in the world and to ensure the well-being of refugees.
In conclusion, Tunisia stressed that "collaboration in the network of Mayors for Peace allows sharing of resources and experiences and give voice to municipalities in international areas on major issues that affect humanity."
