They build an amphibian pond in the natural spot Cabezo de la Jara (21/05/2017)

It is a pond that takes advantage of surface runoff to achieve a temporary aquatic environment that facilitates the reproduction of amphibian species.

"The performance has been a complete success, because this spring have reproduced in it two species, the toad runner and the common mottled frog."

The AsociaciónHerpetológicaMurciana has built a pond for amphibians in the natural area Cabezo de la Jara in Puerto Lumbreras, which is considered a Place of Community Importance (LIC).

It is a pond that takes advantage of surface runoff to achieve a temporary aquatic environment, which imitates the ponding that naturally formed in the vicinity of the Youth Hostel of Cabezo de la Jara, where they reproduced the species of amphibians present in the area .

Specifically, the pond is 10 meters in diameter and a maximum depth of 60 centimeters.

For its construction, waterproofing plastic sheet has been used and it has been completely covered with mortar.

The area selected for its construction is a small trough protected by a patch of terrain that collects the runoff from the rain of that area of the Lodge.

As a complementary action, repopulation with native species has been carried out.

Members of the association have explained that "amphibians are the most threatened group of vertebrates globally and face numerous threats." The LIC of Cabezo de la Jara and Rambla de Nogalte has few water points where they can reproduce. Has been a complete success, because this spring have reproduced in it two species, the toad runner and the common spotted toad.

It is worth mentioning that in addition to being a breeding point, the pond has become an excellent watering hole for wildlife, which is visited by numerous species of birds and mammals, as evidenced by the numerous footprints that can be seen in its vicinity.

Finally, it should be noted that this project has been funded by the Office of Socioeconomic Impact of the Environment OISMA of the Ministry of Agriculture Water and Environment of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.
