Rain of perseids in the night sky of Cabezo de la Jara (13/08/2017)

More than 300 people went to the Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory to observe the fall of "perseidas" popularly known as "rain of stars" or "tears of San Lorenzo".

"Every year the number of people attending this activity increases, which has already become a must for amateur astronomers."

María Victoria Jerez, Councilor for Tourism and Culture explained.

Last night, more than 300 people attended the Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory to observe the fall of "perseidas" popularly known as "rain of stars" or "tears of San Lorenzo." It is a special and free day organized The Department of Tourism and Culture in collaboration with the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia, coinciding with one of the nights of the year that more perseidas can be observed.

The evening began at 22.00 with a presentation and projection of Perseids, by members of the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia who explained this astral phenomenon.

The attendees were also able to observe some celestial bodies like Saturn and the Moon from the telescopes installed in the esplanade of the Youth Hostel and already near the middle of the night they could observe the perséidas to open sky.

The Councilor for Tourism and Culture, María Victoria Jerez, explained that 'every year the number of people attending this activity has already become a must for amateur astronomers.

It is an activity suitable for all ages and especially for family enjoyment.

This initiative is part of the "Know the Stars" program designed by the Department of Tourism and Culture of the City of Puerto Lumbreras for the summer months.

The "Know the Stars" program includes guided tours, talks and outdoor seminars by members of the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia and is held every Wednesday and Saturday from 22:00 pm at the Astronomical Observatory Cabezo de la Jara, until the 15th of September.

The price of these guided astronomical observations is 2.5euros for adults and children up to 10 years free.
