"We are holding meetings with the company and the Community of Irrigators with the aim of making compatible the installation project of a photovoltaic plant in our town and the protection of the cultivation lands of the municipality", explained the mayor.
The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has presented allegations to the installation project of a photovoltaic power plant in the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras, considering that it harms the development of the primary sector in the municipality.
Specifically, the project provides for the installation of a power plant on land located in the deputation of Puerto Adentro and Lumbreras, affecting all or part of 706 plots (covering 1,300 hectares), which would cause the loss of consideration of irrigation for said lands by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, and would imply the passage to dry land, and the loss of the corresponding water concession.
The mayor of the town, Mª Ángeles Túnez, explained that "the installation of photovoltaic energy plates would affect the development of the primary sector in the municipality, since this area is the one with the greatest possibility of expanding agriculture. the photovoltaic power plant would limit the agriculture sector, being this the main economic engine of the municipality ".
It should be noted that the economy of Puerto Lumbreras is based on the primary sector, since agriculture and livestock represent 55% of the active population.
Mª Ángeles Tunisia stressed that "the primary sector generates many employment opportunities in the municipality, therefore, we must continue to empower, care and strengthen it as a fundamental sector."
Tunisia stressed that "we strongly support the Irrigation Community and appreciate all the effort they have made, for decades, in collaboration with the City Council, to increase the allocation of irrigation water in the municipality and the modernization of irrigation."
On the other hand, the mayor stressed that "carrying out a strict exercise of responsibility, we can not allow an investment of this scope to be lost, as it will allow the creation of new employment opportunities and the revitalization of the productive fabric with a new economic model Therefore, we are holding meetings with the company and the Irrigation Community with the main objective of making compatible the installation project of a photovoltaic plant in our town and the protection of the cultivation lands of the municipality.
Likewise, the allegations have taken into account other aspects such as: a) neighborhood roads for public use that cross or are inserted in the enclosures planned for the photovoltaic park;
b) network and drinking water distribution nodes that cross, or are inserted in the enclosures foreseen for the solar photovoltaic field;
c) municipal rights and obligations with respect to urban issues;
d) the impact on the physical environment, biodiversity, natural risks and the landscape.
It should be noted that the project is subject to an Ordinary Environmental Impact Assessment.
Finally, the City Council of Puerto Lumbreras has requested that the Community of Irrigators be included as an interested party, incorporating the allegations of this group as their own.
