Inauguration of the first University for Seniors organized in the Region of Murcia which is held in Puerto Lumbreras through the University of the Sea (12/07/2010)

The municipality participating for the first year in the summer courses at the Universidad del Mar. Over 30 students participate in the conference on Science University for over 50 years throughout the week include several lectures, case studies and guided tours in municipality to train students.

The town of Puerto Lumbreras hosts throughout the week the first University of Elders organized in the region by the University of Murcia and included in the 2010 academic offerings of the Universidad del Mar. The town's mayor, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, general director Universities and Scientific Policy, Eduardo Osuna, and the director of the Universidad del Mar, Manuela Lopez, opened the conference with which Puerto Lumbreras participates for the first year at the University of the Sea and which is intended to educate seniors 50 years in science.

"For our town is a privilege to provide a space for training, participation and sharing for the elderly. This first major university to be established as a fun and educational event in which participants will expand their scientific and cultural training," says Mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez.

Specifically, the conference will develop from now until next Friday, July 16 at the new socio-cultural 'Casa de los Duendes' of Puerto Lumbreras.

The course will cover five thematic areas, each with a theoretical part including roundtables and conferences, and other practice in which students develop practical demonstrations and workshops.

In addition, the program module is complemented by a cultural entertainment including guided tours, excursions and tours of the town.

Among the contents of the University Senior notes 'Science and everyday life', 'Universe' or 'Health Promotion'.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to train in other areas such as 'New Technologies' and 'Environment'.

In this regard, Sanchez pointed out that these days the aim is that "students become familiar with science and technology by learning to alternate the theoretical and practical recreational initiatives."

Thus, through lectures and workshops the conference will familiarize students on healthy eating habits or bring them keys to improving memory.

A talk entitled 'Survival Guide to the age of electronics and telecommunications', by two professors of computer science at the University of Murcia, advise students on everything related to Internet, email, chats, blogs and networks social.

Among the topics to be discussed at the conference will include the problem of pollution, the potential of new technologies or the application of mathematics in everyday life, among other aspects.

Along with the more purely theoretical activities, the conference includes a wide range of recreational and cultural activities, including an exhibition, food tasting and a practical session of physiotherapy.

The program also includes a guided tour of the facilities of the Plataforma Solar de Almeria, an astronomical observatory in Cabezo de la Jara and an excursion to the town of Aguilas.
