Schools of Puerto Lumbreras participate in the European project '+ Respect' to work against ethnic discrimination (29/07/2010)

The City Council staff participated in the working meeting with European partner municipalities to design the action plan developed by the consistory with municipalities in other countries such as Romania, Italy or Greece for 18 months.

The municipality promotes activities of study and analysis of the Roma through the Social Services, and launch educational workshops and recreational and cultural activities which will involve schools from next year.

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras, through the Department of Social Policy, participates in the European project '+ Respect' with which we work to eradicate discrimination against Roma and other ethnic minorities in Europe.

The municipality has participated in the working meeting held in the Puglia Region (Italy), which also held a seminar 'information and awareness campaign to combat discrimination against Roma. "

At that meeting, the project staff in Puerto Lumbreras, along with representatives of the partner municipalities in countries such as Romania, Italy, Netherlands, and Greece, have set the action to promote and encourage respect for ethnic minorities.

In this sense, the session will start lumbrerense actions to study and analysis of the Roma, as well as participatory workshops and cultural performances.

In addition, we will design an information campaign and awareness related to ethnic minorities.

The Mayor of the town, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, said that "since the session will be launched various actions that will address every part of the municipality, and which involve all the departments of the consistory, as the social integration of ethnic minorities requires educational processes and actions which involve as many groups of society. "

Thus, the City has already initiated actions to study and analysis of the Gypsy population through social services, and they are expected participatory workshops and performances which will involve schools from next year to raise awareness on ethnic respect.

The 'Fundamental rights and citizenship', which is part of the project '+ Respect', aims to promote the development of a European society based on respect for fundamental rights, strengthening civil society and encouraging an open dialogue transparent and regular dialogue on these rights set out in the Treaty on European Union.

Also, many of its actions to combat racism, xenophobia and antisemitism, and promoting better interfaith and intercultural understanding.
