Puerto Lumbreras is one of the first municipalities in the Region of Murcia, which will operate a biogas plant (14/01/2011)

The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, announced this morning that Puerto Lumbreras "will be one of the first municipalities in the region which will have a biogas plant which will heat and power through organic matter."

The project is proposed in three annual steps that will bring the plant up to 3 megawatts peak power generation.

The plant will process more than 100,000 tonnes of organic waste per year with those who produce more than 10,300,000 meters cubic meters of biogas.

Puerto Lumbreras is one of the first municipalities in the Region of Murcia, which will operate a biogas plant to promote renewable energy production.

The Mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, announced this week the creation of this new infrastructure will be located in the hamlet of Campero, near the sewage of the town, and will contribute to "convert agricultural and livestock waste into electricity and thermal promoting the reduction of CO2 emissions and environmental friendliness. "

Specifically, the new plant will treat livestock waste as manure and slurry and waste from agricultural activities that will convert into biogas through anaerobic digesters.

In this sense, the average biogas has a calorific value between 4,500 to 5,600 kilocalories per cubic meter, can produce electricity through turbines or gas plants, furnaces, ovens, dryers, boilers or other combustion systems.

Also, the biogas plant will not only Puerto Lumbreras only get electricity and heat, and will also produce other solid organic matter (compost) to be used directly as fertilizer on farms, and to incorporate suitable nitrogen water the irrigation network.

In this sense, the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, explained that "it is an infrastructure of over 3,000 square meters that will produce electricity without consuming natural resources, and completely eliminating greenhouse gases and CO2 emissions. "

In conclusion, Sanchez explained that the new biogas plant will begin construction during this year 2011 and will involve three separate phases through an investment of close to 3 million euros.
