Declared Cultural Interest listed by the archaeological 'Barranco del Ass' in Puerto Lumbreras (27/10/2011)

The site of the Ass Barranco corresponds to a settlement of the Bronze Age, belonging to the Culture Argaric and framed chronologically between 2200-1500 BC

Already more than 15 archaeological sites classified as Assets of Cultural Interest in the town in recent months.

The archaeological site of the Ass Barranco Puerto Lumbreras has been declared of Cultural Interest by the Directorate General of Cultural Assets of the Region of Murcia.

Specifically, the site corresponds to a settlement in the plain of the Bronze Age, belonging to the Culture Argaric and framed chronologically between 2200-1500 BC

The purpose of cataloging the site 'Barranco del Ass' to protect and preserve the archaeological heritage of the locality.

According to the Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Maribel Martinez, "this type of deposits help convey the story of the town at different times, and this is more than 15 sites declared Assets of Cultural Interest in the town over the last year ".

Thus, the archaeological site is set on the foothills of a mountainous belonging to the boundary of the eastern slope of the Sierra de las Estancias, 4 miles southwest of the center town of Puerto Lumbreras.

In 1999 collection is the definition of archaeological site in the list of sites of archaeological map of Puerto Lumbreras.

Prospecting in these sherds were documented, and the remains of a structure that could be part of a wall.

Later, in 2006, the site was studied again in a global work on the prehistory of Puerto Lumbreras.

Highlights include the discovery of two graves affiliation Argaric clear: first, in plots of crops, with homes located southwest of the site, it was a cist burial, in which skeletal remains were found inside three glasses and ceramics.

The second consisted of a box with a lid in which were also found inside bones.

As for the material remains, ceramics are represented by coarse bill yields and the outer surface smoothed.

After the documentation of this site, the general direction of Cultural Heritage in collaboration with the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras continues working on other cases to protect various prehistoric archaeological sites in the locality.

In this sense, the Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Maribel Martinez, said that "in recent months are over 15 sites declared Assets of Cultural Interest in the locality."

Among the newly protected sites include Peña Blanca, Ray Cave, or Poveda cistern belonging to Roman times.
