The Minister for Universities and Research Company, Jose Ballesta has met with the Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, and with the mayors of Alhama de Murcia, Murcia, White, Cieza, La Union, Torre Pacheco and Yecla to know the European project status Medeea
Puerto Lumbreras was the first Spanish town to join the Covenant of Mayors, and their participation in the project will continue to reinforce Medea "new municipal energy plans which will provide a great opportunity for the sector of renewable energy and energy efficiency."

The Minister for Universities and Research Company, José Ballesta, met this morning with the mayors of the municipalities participating in the European project Medeea-Puerto Lumbreras, Alhama de Murcia, Murcia, White, Cieza, La Union, Torre Pacheco and Yecla - to follow up on this initiative.
The objectives of the project will allow Puerto Lumbreras, and other municipalities to obtain the European Energy Award, eea ®, a certificate that they endorse as municipalities have managed to develop sustainable energy plans for significant savings in energy consumption and emissions to the atmosphere.
This European project will link with the objectives set out in the Covenant of Mayors, in which Puerto Lumbreras was the first Spanish town to join, and involves the development and implementation of effective local energy policy, once implemented in full energy savings would result close to 40 million per year, in all the 8 participating municipalities.
The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, said that "with the participation of Puerto Lumbreras in the project Medeea and Local Action Plan designed by the municipality after accession to the Covenant of Mayors, we will strengthen efforts to meet commitments adopted by the European Union to reduce by 20% the emissions of greenhouse gases, to save 20% energy consumption through increased energy efficiency and promote renewable energy up to 20% '
As for the European certificate eea ®, the participating municipalities will be evaluated with a score and when it exceeds 50 percent of maximum, obtained a certificate of energy quality.
On the other hand, all participating municipalities entered into a European ranking that recognizes the best initiatives each year, which will encourage competition among municipalities, thus serving as a stimulus to advance new proposals.
"The achievement of the certificate is a prestigious brand and a strong support when attracting investment and European funds for these municipalities," he explains.
Opportunity for the sector of renewables and efficiency
During the meeting, have said that both the European project Medeea as the Covenant of Mayors are a great business opportunity for the sector of renewable energy and energy efficiency through public-private partnership.
For the design of energy-saving plans, the eight municipalities have the Ministry of Universities and Research Company, which through the Agency for Energy Management in the Region of Murcia is providing them with technical advice to decide what adopt measures and study the feasibility of them.
Among these measures, which include the use of renewable energy is from the installation of photovoltaic solar panels on municipal buildings or biomass boilers for indoor climate control until the change of LED street lighting systems and energy efficient lighting .
The Agency for Energy Management of the Autonomous Community Support Structure is the Covenant of Mayors in the region and partner with project Medeea Jaén and other energy agencies from Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Malta and Slovenia.
