The City Council is running the program "Meet the Stars' for guided tours of the Astronomical Observatory and the Path (29/07/2012)

The Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras, through the Department of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia, has launched a program of guided and free nightly visits to the Astronomical Observatory of Cabezo de la Jara is develop during every Wednesday and Saturday in July, August and September at around Cabezo la Jara.

Specifically, the Campaign 'Meet the Stars', offers tours, lectures and seminars outdoors and observing the different constellations through Telescope Observatory Cabezo de la Jara.

According to the Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Maribel Martinez, "the program allows you to bring the world of astronomy to the people and is established as an alternative to summer activities taking place during every Wednesday and Saturday in July and August from 22.00 hours. "

The sessions are taught by astronomical members of the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia, and include an introductory talk to astronomy, which also include legends and curiosities about the constellations.

In addition, guided tours include a knowledge session with an explanation of the sky with the naked eye, ending with the observation of celestial objects through the largest telescope in the dome of the Astronomical Observatory.

In this sense, the campaign includes visits to the Path Astronomical Cabezo de la Jara, consisting of 1,500 meters to cross the natural environment Cabezo la Jara, and incorporates two sundials and a mole located strategically along the route.

It also includes a solar system with planets drawn to scale, and through signage and three viewpoints forms a suitable route for observation, contemplation and study of astronomy.

The Astronomical Observatory Cabezo la Jara is located at 1246 meters above sea level and 7 kilometers from the center of Puerto Lumbreras.

Their facilities include more than 80 square meters and include a dome, an observation room, reflector telescope from Meade LX 200 12, a classroom of astronomy CCD cameras, photography and video and computer control.
