The Mayor and the Director General of the Environment this morning visited the countryside in the Cabezo de la Jara where floods last September 28 caused significant damage to more than 4,450 acres.

Rainfall were recorded over 300 l/m2 which caused damage to more than 50 kilometers of rural roads, trails and the flora and fauna of the area declared a Site of Community Importance (SCI).

The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, and the CEO of Environment, Amador Lopez, have held a meeting this morning to plan further action in the natural landscape of the Jara Cabezo where floods last September 28 caused damage over 4,450 acres.

So, have agreed to design an Action Plan to restore the area is declared a Site of Community Interest (SCI).

In this sense, the Mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, explained that "our intention is to continue working on the construction of retaining walls, seawalls, ditches, and water runoff areas to prevent damage to future rain, while continuing working on the recovery of the natural place where rains were over 300 l/m2 ".

Thus, and to alleviate the damage, the City and the Community will promote new works on roads and reforestation activities to be included in an Environmental Action Plan Cabezo de la Jara.

This also seek the cooperation of other government and private sponsors.

Among the actions that the Action Plan stresses the definitive repair of forest roads, rural roads, greenways, and trails that were affected by the flood.

Also build breakwaters in areas of high soil erosion and road culverts.

Similarly, it will rebuild levees and terraces that sealed the ravines and were destroyed by the flood.

Also be developed reforestation to prevent erosion and soil degradation immediate and biodiversity loss.

In this sense, the damaged areas have a score of native species that have been affected.

Among these are shrubs and trees such as holm, oaks, rushes, junipers and mastic.

In addition, the damage also affected springs, ponds and natural waterholes.

Finally, the natural landscape of Cabezo de la Jara is considered a Site of Community Importance (SCI), and also has a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).

His landscapes are composed mainly of oaks and large-sized pine, rosemary, cistus, and inhabit the different animal species such as the almost extinct tortoise, owl or wild boar.
