The CHS plans to build a large dam in the ravine flood Nogalte (03/05/2013)

The Segura basin (CHS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, is studying the construction of a large dam on the boulevard of Nogalte definitively resolving the problems caused by floods in Puerto Lumbreras and increase reserves of water for irrigation.

CHS President, Miguel Angel Ródenas, announced today the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, project status during a visit to the town which included the tour of one of the possible construction sites.

Also presented the work Ródenas already finished channeling repair the boardwalk and other investments aimed at improving flood defenses.

After analyzing the effects of the flood of St. Wenceslas last fall, technicians basin organization are planning to build a work definitively resolving the tragic consequences-both victims and material damage, which throughout history have successive floods caused to suffer this wadi.

In fact, even in memory the destructive effects of Nogalte flood of 1973 that killed more than 80 people, and even last year, with five fatalities in total across the basin.

Ródenas stated that "this situation should be corrected, it is not permissible in the XXI century and in a country of the European Union".

To this end it provides for the construction of a dam capable of laminar flow more than 2,500 cubic meters per second, equivalent to the strip that brought the bed of the ravine on September 28, 2012.

At the same time, the work to store water that can be used in agriculture.

The Confederation believes this project indispensable to ensure safety of people.

In addition, prior to this project, the agency has initiated basin hydrological correction five works at the head of the Rambla de Nogalte, in the town of Velez Rubio Almeria, which will provide improved control of the avenues that cause damage downstream in municipalities such as Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras and Pulpí (Almería), among others.

With a total budget of 8.2 million euros, are co-financed by ERDF funds from the European Union and include the construction of a total of 11 small dams.

These actions are aimed at the correction and stabilization of torrential channels in order to control the processes of erosion, transport and deposition, thus reducing circulating solids flows and regulate fluid flow therein, improving safety.

On the other hand, the Confederation has already invested a total of 1.3 million euros in the recovery of the course of the Rambla de Nogalte and other watercourses in the municipality lumbrerense damaged by flooding last year.

First, as a matter of urgency, the CHS completed work on two sections of the Rambla de Nogalte, in the urban area and upstream.

Work on the section that crosses the population consisted of riverbed protection works by retrieving rakes.

Regarding the upper stretch, breakwaters have been placed, protected and consolidated margins slopes.

Also there have been five hydrological correction works in different wadis of Puerto Lumbreras.

Repairs is jetties in the wadis of the Murciano, Vilerda and the Five Oliveras, besides protecting margins with a new breakwater in the Barranco del Confectioner and improving communication at various points between the margins of the promenade El Murciano.
