Mayors of Puerto Lumbreras, Lorca, Huercal Overa and Velez Rubio panifican a common strategy for the conservation of the natural landscape of Cabeza de la Jara (15/07/2013)

The mayors of Puerto Lumbreras, Lorca, Huercal Overa and Velez Rubio participated in a conference in which they agreed to work on a common strategy for environmental protection Cabeza de la Jara who share the 4 municipalities.

The natural landscape of Cabeza de la Jara is considered as a Site of Community Importance (SCI), Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) and is included in the Natura 2000 network.

The mayors of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, Lorca, Francisco Jodar, Huercal Overa, Domingo Fernández, and Velez Rubio, Miguel Martinez-Carlon, have developed this morning in Puerto Lumbreras a workday together to initiate a strategy common to the four municipalities to protect the natural landscape of Cabeza de la Jara.

In this sense, the Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras this workshop asked the mayors of the three municipalities that share in the natural territory of Cabeza de la Jara, with the aim of "creating a common work plan on the environment with joint actions to promote conservation and protection of this natural setting. "

Likewise, the mayors have agreed on "the importance of this common strategy among four municipalities in two regions, to coordinate and promote joint actions and projects at European level apply for environmental enhancement Cabeza de la Jara".

Thus, the Cabeza de la Jara is characterized by oak forest formations that extend throughout the area, sometimes as the only dominant species and other sharing that hegemony with the pine Some specimens can exceed 1000 years old; in fact considered the most representative and emblematic tree of the Iberian Peninsula by geographical area and by number of feet.

In terms of fauna highlights the presence of a significant number of native species such as herons, steppe birds, reptiles, although highlights one of the largest indigenous populations of tortoise density.

In this sense, the Cabeza de la Jara is established as the highest mountain in the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras, with an altitude of 1,242 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest peaks across the region of Murcia.

Thus, the Cabeza de la Jara bordered to the west by the province of Almería, in the towns of Huercal Overa and Velez Rubio, and north to the town of Lorca, and south and east with Puerto Lumbreras, which makes four municipalities share in this environment landscape areas which are consider (LIC) Community sight more than 1347 acres, and in addition there is also a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA), and is part of the Natura 2000 network.

During the working day the four mayors have agreed to establish a common strategy for the conservation, care and protection of the site Cabeza de la Jara.

To this end, promote conservation action and promotion of forests within the Cabeza de la Jara, and provide reports of coordination between different agencies to know the state of conservation and protection of species.

In this sense, explained that with this new project, "we want to promote environmental protection in the development of Cabeza de la Jara, one of the green lungs sharing the Region of Murcia and Andalusia."
