The Full Council passes a motion to boost awareness campaigns for the use of food surpluses to help disadvantaged families (27/08/2013)

The City will promote awareness campaigns aimed at families, shops, and supermarkets for the use of surplus food unfit for consumption that can be allocated to food banks.

The mayor of Puerto Lumbreras stressed that "we are working on new solidarity campaigns to collect food to continue to provide basic needs to the people most in need."

The Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras, through the Municipal Council, unanimously adopted a motion requesting the creation of specific campaigns to raise awareness on the use of food surpluses that could be used as food banks and soup kitchens for the neediest families.

Thus, the motion was approved unanimously, and it also proposes the creation of new campaigns to collect food to help "those in need".

In this regard, the report GLOBAL FOOD WASTE AND FOOD LOSSES (losses and food waste in the world), commissioned by the FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture) states that "almost a third of the food we occur each year worldwide for human consumption is lost or wasted ", this means that each year about 1,300 million tonnes wasted food.

Also, a third of the food that fail to consume in developed countries are wasted at home because, in most cases, to inefficient practices as granting undue importance to appearance, the confusion that labels with various dates because consumers do not hesitant to throw food safe.

For this, the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras has approved a motion proposing the implementation of specific campaigns to raise awareness of the population (families, businesses catering, supermarkets, food companies, etc.) in the problem of waste foods.

Also, the City of Puerto Lumbreras is committed to encourage and support initiatives such as food banks, direct collaboration with Caritas to optimize the utilization of food and thus reach the people who need it most.

In this sense, the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, M ª Ángeles Tunisia, stressed that "we are working on new solidarity campaigns to collect food and to continue to provide basic needs to the people most in need."

In addition, Maria Angeles Tunisia, added that "through solidarity campaigns as" Adopt a Family "aim to help those most in need and involve all citizens, companies and associations who want to collaborate."

Similarly, Tunisia has explained that "through social services, the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras and Caritas Parish spent more than 15,000 kilos of staples during the last year to more than a hundred families."

Finally, the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras has agreed to issue this initiative to the Governing Council of the Region of Murcia, to counseling for Health and Social Policy, the spokespersons of the parliamentary groups of the Regional Assembly of Caritas Region of Murcia, to the Food Bank of the Region of Murcia, ASEPLU Employers Confederation and the Chamber of Commerce of Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras.
