The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras and CEO of Clean Energy and Climate Change presents 150 measures that form the Strategic Plan to combat climate change in Puerto Lumbreras 2008-2012. (23/05/2008)

The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras and Regional Representative, Pedro Antonio Sanchez and General Director of Clean Energy and Climate Change, Paul Miranda, presented this morning, the Strategic Plan to combat climate change in Puerto Lumbreras 2008-2012.

The Plan contains more than 150 measures will be implemented within four years of the plan.

Conscious of the urgency of the problem of Climate Change, the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras has developed this plan of action to combat the constant emission of CO2.

With the creation of this Plan, Puerto Lumbreras is joining the adoption of measures for enforcement of the Kyoto Protocol under which signatories pledge to reduce emissions in the period 2008-2012.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PLAN.

Reduce the impacts caused Climate Change on the health of citizens.

Increase use of renewable energy sources by improving the energy science in both the residential and services sector.

Increase public awareness to their daily activities more sustainable.

To this end, the City acquired among others, the following commitments:

Accession to the Spanish Network of Cities for Climate

Creating an Environment Sector Council.

Creation of an Office of Climate Change.

Ratify the Charter of Aalborg, 1994.

Join the Network of Local Governments Biodiversity 2010.

Accession to the Covenant of Mayors to Combat Climate Change.

Accession to the European Awareness Campaign on Energy.

ACTION PLAN

Performing a cross on which policy has involved all areas of the City Council, the Strategic Plan to Combat Climate Change consists of more than 150 measures were classified as: energy efficiency, water, transportation, land use, tourism, residential, waste , industrial, agriculture and sinks.

In the transport sector will develop bike lanes and a rental service for bicycles.

In addition, enhance the use of introducing biofuels in all petrol stations across the board.

As for waste encourage the reuse of construction waste and will encourage eco-packaging in the industrial and commercial sector, will expand the Plan Biodigestion Purines and collection points will be installed for packaging and agricultural and livestock waste.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS, TRAINING AND OUTREACH.

The main objective of this area is to increase interest and awareness of the population and sensitize lumbrerenses of measures to combat climate change.

This will carry out training activities at work on climate change.

On the other hand, actions are carried out awareness raising, outreach and education on issues related to climate change, such as:

Proposals and concepts will be introduced relating to Climate Change in the Local Compact II for Education.

Creating a "green seal" for companies undertaking waste recycling.

Creation of an annual competition for ideas for Renewable Energy and Climate Change to enhance the town of Puerto Lumbreras

Building support for those schools and associations conducting lumbrerenses environmental education activities to curb climate change.
