12% of the agricultural area of Puerto Lumbreras is ecological (17/01/2009)

From the Department of Rural Development of Puerto Lumbreras has carried out a study on organic farming in the municipality, in this study was obtained in 2008 with organic production has increased significantly, representing 12% organic agricultural area in Puerto Lumbreras.

Organic production is grown mainly in Puerto Lumbreras is the almond and olive groves of olives for oil but also dominant vegetable growing outdoors and in greenhouses.

Since the launch of the 2008-2012 Strategic Plan ECOPUERTO the departments of Rural Development and Enterprise, Employment and Development are offering all the necessary information to farmers to enable them to convert their traditional crops to organic crops.

On the other hand, since these councils in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture will be conducting training courses and lectures for farmers so they can train and specialize in the farming sector.

The first of these talks will take place next March 26 in municipality of Esparragal, where farmers interested parties may participate in this talk to be delivered by professionals of the Spanish Society of Ecology.

ORGANIC FARMING

Organic farming is a system for growing, basing a farm in the optimal use of natural resources without using chemicals or genetically encoded, either as fertilizer or to combat pests, thus achieving obtain organic foods while preserving the fertility of the land and respecting the environment.
