Puerto Lumbreras is part of a European program against domestic violence in rural areas (21/02/2009)

It is the first time that Puerto Lumbreras presents a project for this program to combat violence and has been the only approved in the region of Murcia.

The objective is the training and performance development tools specifically designed for rural areas

The mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, met with his counterpart Cretan Danellis Spyros, a partner in the program and who also shared their experiences on tourism and organic farming, essential for both towns

Puerto Lumbreras is a city concerned about inequality and injustice situations.

Any initiative will be an opportunity to contribute to a more modern, fairer and where there is no type of violence or discrimination. "

With these words, described the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, his interest in the European program Daphne III.

Daphne III is the major work of the EU in the fight against violence, this project focuses on the development of equality policies and the elimination of violence against women in rural areas.

For the city lumbrerense, is the first time that has a project in this area, being the only that has been adopted in the Region of Murcia.

"Our goal is zero tolerance for violence in any area, anywhere.

We must protect our citizens, understand their rights as central reasons for our actions and try every day to contribute to a society where there is any intimidation or violence, "said the mayor lumbrerense.

The work program will examine the situations of member countries and develop an action plan against violence to women and youth in the municipalities that have large rural areas.

To contribute to these objectives, Puerto Lumbreras will work with other countries such as Sweden, Greece and the UK.

The project was officially launched at a meeting held today in Crete, which involved representatives from institutions of all member countries.

Among the first measures announced by various makers highlights the importance given to awareness raising activities targeting rural populations and promote intolerance of violence against women and children.

It has also highlighted the need for people to report to competent authorities in case of any violence.

The action program launched today includes a research phase in the rural areas of Puerto Lumbreras, which is expected to work with local citizens groups to ascertain their views and considerations of violence and to identify common modes of understanding on this issue .

After this first stage, the EU experts will develop an information and training specifically designed for rural areas.

Generate knowledge in rural areas

During the final part of the project will be applied for training and information on each of the member countries, which contribute to a better perception of the problem and know how to act appropriately against any violent act is detected.

In total, 220 local organizations and 880 individual beneficiaries will receive training in the four countries.

Sharing knowledge and experiences in social networks: I Municipal Plan Against Gender Violence

The program will also have a website for knowledge transfer and dissemination of activities.

The four partner countries will be linked to promote working together, creating social networks for sharing knowledge.

In 2006 Puerto Lumbreras I launched the Municipal Plan Against Gender Violence.

The initiative, now in full operation, it has different action lines.

First, an area of awareness and violence prevention, supported by continuous campaigns of the institution and an area where coordination and cooperation involving social services and law and security forces.

Another major line of work is the support and resources, which has created a Care of Victims of Gender Violence (Savigar), which serves and protects women who have suffered abuse.

Currently, these works are coordinated by the Department of Social Policy, which provides comprehensive support for protecting victims, it serves a staff of professionals specialized in different disciplines to address the social, legal and psychological that may arise.

In addition the Council also has a psychological treatment service for children and adolescents.

The municipality has submitted this formula to work with local partners in the European program, making available to all members of its experience and ways of operation to be exported to other parts of the European Union.

Tourism and farming, green city

The visit to Greece has also facilitated the gathering of Pedro Antonio Sanchez with his counterpart from the town of Hersonissos, Greek Spyros Danellis, with whom he could exchange experiences on two issues of great importance to both populations, tourism and organic farming .

Danellis highlighted in recent years for their active participation in EU projects related to mobility and planning of tourist destinations that have been applied with great success in the city he governs.
