Puerto Lumbreras presents Organic Farming Awareness Campaign (20/03/2009)

The session on March 28 includes briefings with industry professionals and tasting of organic products

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras, through the Department of Rural Development, presented the Organic Agriculture Awareness Campaign to be held on Saturday 28 March in the town and will feature numerous activities aimed at spreading the development and production organic farming in the municipality.

"Puerto Lumbreras is a town committed to the farmer and through this program we present a new option that makes the farmer more self-sufficient and independent while providing economic and environmental benefits, better and more sustainable production," said Councilman Development Rural, Jose Maria Parra.

The project, promoted by the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture (EEAS), is the implementation of measures to promote the establishment and the farmers and their conversion to organic farming enterprises.

The Councillor for Rural Development, Jose Maria Parra, will be responsible for presenting the journey that will take place next March 28 from 10:00 am at the municipal offices of The Esparragal.

Then, Jose Maria Egea, professional department of Botany and Biology at the University of Murcia, provide a briefing to farmers lumbrerenses in explaining the benefits of organic farming, its operation and requirements for its implementation.

In addition, an organic farmer in the area explain his own experience in the sector.

On the other hand, the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras has organized a tasting of organic products like juice, fruit and wine for all attendees.

Organic Agriculture

This new system of agricultural production brings many economic benefits as creating jobs or increasing the income of farmers through the reduction of external economic dependence.

In addition, organic farming helps the environment by improving the fertility of agricultural land and the efficient use of energy use.

This new system produces healthy food, more nutritious and tasty and also favors the retention of water without contaminating the aquifers.

"Farming's campaign includes a free advice service in order to accompany the farmers in the conversion process.

In addition, there will be technical seminars and training activities on biodiversity, genetic resources and seed marketing and local markets for organic products, "said Jose Maria Parra.
