The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, and the director of the Institute of Women of the Region of Murcia, Teresa Moreno, presented the Daphne-Spire project against domestic violence in rural areas to promote the Municipality of Puerto Lumbreras together with other European Union countries such as Sweden, Greece and United Kingdom.

Daphne-European program Spire examine the situations of member countries and develop an action plan against violence to women and youth in the municipalities that have large rural areas.

The project was officially launched at a meeting in late February in Crete with the participation of institutional representatives from all member countries, among which was the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras and Regional Representative, Pedro Antonio Sánchez.

Regarding the work plan will be developed in three distinct phases, which include awareness raising activities targeting rural populations.

The program of action includes a first phase of research in rural areas of Puerto Lumbreras, which is expected to work with local citizens groups to discuss perceptions and considerations of violence, and thus detect the understanding on this issue.

After this first stage, European Union experts will discuss the findings and prepare the materials for the campaign in rural areas.

Finally, develop an informative and educational interventions in rural areas which will benefit 220 local organizations and 880 individual beneficiaries in the four countries participating in the project.

The program will also have a website to communicate the knowledge and dissemination of activities, and other actions carried out for individual learning using new technologies and social networks.

The four partner countries remain connected to promote working together, creating social networks for sharing knowledge.

I Municipal Plan Against Gender Violence

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras I launched the Municipal Plan Against Gender Violence in 2006.

The action plan has different lines for awareness and prevention of violence through continuous institutional campaigns and an area where further coordination and cooperation involving both social services such as security and police forces of the municipality.

In addition, the Municipal Plan Against Gender Violence includes a Service to Victims of Domestic Violence (Savigar), where it protects and serves battered women through specialized professionals in different disciplines to address social needs , legal and psychological.
