The general director of Sports, Antonio Peñalver, along with the director general of the Spanish Cycling Federation, Jose Griñán, director general of People with Disabilities, Marisol Morente, and the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, today introduced Championship Adapted Cycling in Spain, to be held on 15, 16 and 17 May in Puerto Lumbreras.
"This is a major event that will lead us to admire the successful integration of disabled people through sport," said Penalver.
There are different categories, as classified by each federation disabilities (physical disabilities, cerebral palsy, blind and visually impaired) and participants are the medalists Vicente Arzo, Juan Méndez, Javier Otxoa and Roberto Mayor.
In the championship involving all the associations and territorial delegations with their respective teams: Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Canarias, Cantabria, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, La Rioja, Valencia, Basque Country and the Balearic Islands.
Categories
The physically disabled riders compete in one of the following 4 functional classes: LC1, LC2, LC3, LC4.
There is also the form of Hand-Cycling or biking hand that participants are characterized by hand bike tricycles.
Cyclists with cerebral palsy compete in four functional divisions by type of disability: Division D4 and D3, two-wheel bike, and D2 and D1 division of tricycle.
Blind or visually impaired participate in cycling competitions in tandem, accompanied by a sighted pilot.
