Puerto Lumbreras I welcome the Regional Seminar "Local police and the Roma Community: An integrative perspective ' (11/06/2009)

The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, and the general director of Local Government and Institutional Relations, Javier Iniesta, inaugurated the conference which has had numerous papers in which representatives of Roma Regional and Local Police

The City Council of Puerto Lumbreras, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Presidency and Public Administration, organized the First Regional integration time between the local police and the Roma community.

The Mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, and the general director of Local Government and Institutional Relations, Javier Iniesta, inaugurated the conference "Local police and the Roma Community: An Integrative Perspective ', which has received papers in which they participated representatives of the FSG and the Association of Heads of Murcia and Local Police Officers.

"From the City have organized this first edition of the Journey of Integration between local police and the Roma community to promote the analysis and the cultural exchange that benefits the relationship of these two groups.

Social changes indicate the need for an approach to social and human reality of the Roma people to facilitate their integration and break down prejudices and stereotypes that may exist today, "said the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez.

The event, which has sought to promote the analysis to contribute to the improvement of police and social intervention within the Roma community, has targeted members of the armed and security forces and social service workers and in education.

Among the papers that have been developed, highlighted the involvement of David Martin, Sgt Fuenlabrada Local Police, which has exposed the police actions in the field of equal treatment and nondiscrimination.

In addition, Raquel del Río, technical Equal Area FSG has also explained the measures to combat discrimination against Roma.

In this sense, the mayor, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, added that "today is essential to equip professionals with skills to identify and intervene with preventive level all situations arising from racial discrimination.

This initiative has served to stimulate discussion and analysis, to ensure equal treatment and non discrimination of the Roma community "

In addition, the day has had other papers in which have been released on good practice experiences in police action.

The first of these interventions, led by Luis Santiago Fernandez, a member of the Gypsy Secretariat Foundation, has served as a first contact to the approach to the Roma and their culture.

Then, Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Valladolid, Fernando Rey Martínez, explained the concepts and legal framework of discrimination, while Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Granada, Carmen Gomez, explained the approach psychosocial influence relations between Roma and non Roma in Spain.

The event, which involved more than a hundred people, ended with a final discussion and the exposure of conclusions.

It has also handed over certificates to all participants.
